Maynard is one of just five seniors on the team, which finished 2-8 last season. Zulkey said he leads the team in more than rushing.

"He's a quiet leader, but kids look up to him," he said. "He works hard to improve his game."

Some areas where Maynard focused this summer were blocking and receiving.

"He's worked hard on the things he needs to do better," Zulkey said.

Davis rebuilds after 12-1 season

Davis advanced to the quarterfinals last season before losing to Lincoln Christian on a last-second field goal. This season, they return just three offensive and five defensive starters. Still, they are favored to win the district.

The team will turn to junior Cole Weber, who will take over the team's quarterbacking duties. He recorded 49 tackles and four interceptions as a safety last season.

The team also returns senior Justin Douglas, who led the Wolves with seven interceptions last year.
