Madill football coach Kerry Roberts has had his share of talented players, especially when he coached at Eufaula.

But Roberts has the collection of skill-position players he has this year is as good of a group as he’s had.

Madill has its own version of the triplets this year in junior quarterback Spencer Bond and senior running back Darryl Fields and receiver Kevin Roberts, the coach’s son.

"Avery Shine is the best overall football player I’ve ever had but Fields is a kid that still hasn’t reached his potential,” Kerry Roberts said. "He’s only been a running back for one year, but if he can get more consistent and more physical, he’s going to open a lot more eyes.”

Not that Fields is having any shortage of attention now. He’s already been offered by Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Kansas, Kansas State and Arkansas among others.

The younger Roberts has proven a consistent target for Bond, who won the Top Gun Challenge in Edmond this summer.

"He’s small, but he’s got great hands,” Roberts said.

Healthy Purcell has Dragons in hunt

A lot was made about the season-ending broken leg that freshman quarterback Cole Swayze suffered late last year.

But what hurt almost as much was losing two linemen, Tyler Fannon and Jameson Short, because of knee surgeries.

"We had to make a lot of adjustments, and we learned a lot about who we are as a team,” coach Mike Wilson said.

After a 10-2 season and now getting all three back and healthy, Purcell is eyeing another district title. Hunter Marcum, who stepped in for Swayze at QB down the stretch, is back at his natural wide receiver position.
