District 3A-6 football preview: Metro Christian one step away

BY TARIQ LEE, Special Correspondent Published: August 14, 2011

Last season, Metro Christian Academy came within one game of playing for a Class 3A state championship, losing to Kingfisher 33-6 in the semifinal.

Outside that semifinal loss, the Patriots lost their three other games by a total of seven points.

Now head coach Jared McCoy is faced with the task of getting them through District 3A-6 and to the championship game.

“We have a lot of skill players back, but we lost our big boys,” McCoy said. “We only have one starter returning on the offensive line so we have kind of recruited the whole Metro school and got some depth but we're still inexperienced.”

Metro Christian returns six starters on an offense led by senior quarterback Andrew Hearon, who threw for 3,900 yards and a school-record 49 touchdowns.

Hearon will have wide receivers Troy Jensen and Drew Hillenburg to toss the ball to after each collected more than 1,000 yards in 2010.

“In our offense, we throw the ball so much that those bodies up front have to be more athletic than big,” McCoy said. “But when you get deep in the playoffs you have to be able to stop people up front at some point.”

Metro's offensive line will have to get acclimated quickly to repeat the success from last season.
