District A-1 football notebook: Hennessey avoids logjam at quarterback

Hennessey avoids logjam at QB
Hennessey coach Shannon Watford appears to have done a pretty good job making hires.

In doing so, though, the Eagles might’ve had a logjam of quarterbacks.

During the offseason, Watford brought in Rick Leutjen from Locust Grove and Victor Morgan from Velma-Alma.

Both coaches had sons who were starting quarterbacks last year: Matt Leutjen and Dillon Morgan. Oh, and Hennessey’s quarterback, Caleb Weaver, also returned from last year’s 11-3 team.

Watford wasn’t worried about problems finding a place for all of them to play, though.

"That was something you always have to think about, but our kids at Hennessey are such good kids,” Watford said. "They’re a very humble group and want to do whatever they can to help us win.”

So Weaver made the move to wide receiver and Morgan back to running back, where he played before jumping to QB last year.

Leutjen will start at quarterback for the Eagles.

"You’ve got to get out of the field and get it together out there, but we’ve got a chance to make some noise this year,” Watford said.

Okeene looks to fill holes on offense
Offense hasn’t been much of a problem for Okeene the last few years.

But with just four starters coming back on that side of the ball, the Whippets could be in for some changes on offense.

But Okeene coach Jeff Wardlaw has been impressed with his new starters throughout the summer.

"We’ve had a really good summer,” Wardlaw said. "The kids really worked hard and put in a good 7-on-7.
