The esteemed science fiction series “Doctor Who is celebrating its 50th anniversary with today’s airing of a special new episode called “The Day of the Doctor.”
It will air in Oklahoma City from 1:50 to 3:10 p.m. today on BBC America (for Cox customers, that’s channel 176 or 762 for BBCA HD).
“The Day of the Doctor” will be broadcast in more than 90 countries at the same time as it airs on BBC One today. The BBC says it is likely to be the largest simulcast of a TV drama in history.
The episode will also be screened in 3D in more than 1,500 cinemas across the world, including Australia, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, Ecuador, Spain, Sweden, Norway and Iceland.
The 50th anniversary adventure stars Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt as different incarnations of the Doctor. Jenna Coleman plays companion Clara, while Billie Piper returns as Rose.
The episode will also feature the Daleks and the return of shape-shifting aliens the Zygons, who first appeared in 1975. The story involves a mystery at London’s National Gallery in the present day, as well as “a murderous plot” in Elizabethan England in 1562, according to the BBC.
Guest stars include Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart and Joanna Page as Elizabeth I.
Hurt’s version of Doctor was first introduced at the end of the episode “The Name of the Doctor,” which was broadcast in May.
On Monday, NCM Fathom Events and BBC America will celebrate the golden anniversary of the world’s longest-running sci-fi series with an explosive RealD 3D presentation of the “Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special: The Day of the Doctor.”
The one-night event will take place at 7:30 p.m. Monday in select cinemas nationwide. In Oklahoma City, the anniversary special will air at Tinseltown USA and AMC Quail Springs 24.
The theatrical event will include specially shot introductions and “The Day of The Doctor: Behind The Lens,” a 10-minute behind-the-scenes featurette directly following the special. The short features Smith, Tennant and Coleman with Piper and Hurt, as well as lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, discussing their 50th anniversary experiences.
