NORMAN — Dogs of all breeds, shapes and sizes auditioned Tuesday for the part of Toto in Sooner Theatre's upcoming production of “The Wizard of Oz.”
The furry, four-legged actors really didn't have to look the part — though, that would be nice — as much as they had to show they could be well-behaved, respond to simple commands and quietly ride in a basket.
Canines with names such as Rosey, Roxy, Mopsey and Franklin vied for the role; but only one lucky dog will land the part. Dogs and their owners leaving the audition were told they'd get a call — or, who knows, maybe even a callback — before the winner is announced.
“The Wizard of Oz” will be performed June 27 through July 1 at Sooner Theatre. The 81-member cast is part of the Sooner Theatre's SummerStage program for boys and girls ages 8 through 13.
Toto can be any age, just so he responds to “Toto, come” or “Toto, stay” and doesn't spook under stage lights or when an audience applauds, said Nancy Coggins, spokeswoman for Sooner Theatre.
