As the biggest Christmas shopping days approach, law enforcement officials are urging Oklahomans to stay alert for fraud and theft.

Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel said it only takes seconds to become a victim, so shoppers should be observant of their surroundings. He suggests having keys in hand when carrying packages to the car, and avoiding leaving items in car seats or on floorboards.

State Attorney General Drew Edmondson said it’s just as important for shoppers to stay alert at the cash register. Edmondson said that in 2006, identities were stolen during the holiday season from more than 250 Oklahomans.

Shoppers should avoid giving out their Social Security numbers. When asked, offer a driver’s license number instead, he said. Also, shop with only one credit card and check store receipts against credit card statements as quickly as possible.

Whetsel said women should keep their purses closed and in sight at all times. He encourages shoppers to wear fanny packs rather than carry purses and wallets.
