Door closes on Edmond apartment rezoning issue

A proposal to build a 285-apartment project east of Interstate 35 near Second Street will not be heard by the Edmond planning commissioners. The multifamily rezoning request has been withdrawn. The project might be altered and refiled at a later time.

Homeowners said they were 100 percent against the apartments.

On the agenda for the planning commission meeting, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at 20 S Littler Ave., is a request for a specific use permit for an addition to the Islamic Society of Edmond's property.

The society wants to build a two-story, 8,307-square-foot activity building on their property at 525 N University Drive, across from the University of Central Oklahoma.

Plans are to tear down a house and construct a 34-foot tall building with a 14-foot dome.

Several nearby residents concerned about the parking and the height of the building and have written letters in opposition to the project, Schiermeyer said.
