OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Douglas County officials say an elderly woman's flu-related death is the first of the season for the county.

The Douglas County Health Department said Friday that the woman died this week after being hospitalized with flu complications. The woman was more than 65 years old and had underlying medical conditions. She was not immunized.

Douglas County Health Director Dr. Adi Pour says the death is a harsh reminder that people die from the highly contagious disease every year.

The first flu cases in Douglas County were recorded in October. To date, more than 1,000 cases have been confirmed in the county this season.

There have been now seven deaths statewide related to the flu this season.
