Douglass has three Division I recruits and plenty of other playmakers

Three Division I recruits can take you a long way in Class 4A football.

But Douglass coach Willis Alexander knows you don't win a state championship without the other 19 contributing.


Defensive end Deondre Clark (committed to LSU), offensive tackle Mildren Montgomery (commit to Texas Tech) and linebacker Johnny Jones (offer from Morgan State) are easily identifiable as the Trojans' three big stars.

But it will be other reliable and effective playmakers like Brandon Jackson, Jordan Stevenson and Jalil England who can help Douglass claim the gold ball again.

Though his schemes and players might change from year to year, Alexander remains focused on the football adage that games and championships are won by running the football and stopping the run.

He has the horses to do it on defense, with Clark, England, Jones and Jackson anchoring a physical front seven. The Trojan secondary is less experienced but has looked strong in the preseason.

“We've got a dominant front four, but I'm in love with our back seven right now,” said Jones, who had 61 tackles and 15 sacks, splitting time between linebacker and defensive end last season. “Things are really starting to click back there. The secondary is really coming along.”
