SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Police say a man is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after being shot several times outside a downtown San Francisco shopping center.

Officer Gordon Shyy says a search is underway Sunday for the gunman who ran away.

The shooting, at about 7:15 p.m., sent people fleeing to the mall for safety and prompted a temporary closure of the Powell Street BART train station.

KTVU-TV reports authorities evacuated riders waiting in the underground train station.

The chaos comes a day after a homeless man was fatally struck by a light rail train at the Muni portion of the station, causing delays for mass-transit riders heading to the area for the Chinese New Year parade.
