Drew Allen named Syracuse's starting quarterback

NORMAN — Former Oklahoma quarterback Drew Allen will start Syracuse’s 2013 season opener Saturday against Penn State, coach Scott Shafer announced.

Shafer made the announcement 10 minutes before the Orange and Nittany Lions kicked off Saturday afternoon.

Allen, a senior, graduated from OU in May. Blake Bell supplanted Allen as Landry Jones’ backup before the start of last season, so the San Antonio native transferred to Syracuse under NCAA rules that allow fifth-year seniors to transfer with immediate eligibility.

Bell was expected to become Oklahoma’s starting quarterback in 2013, but lost the preseason position battle to redshirt freshman Trevor Knight.

Allen didn’t take any snaps in 2012. As a sophomore, he appeared in five games, completing nine of 16 passes for 71 yards.
