“We'd like to get at least 10 more,” Scott Lane said Friday.
Most drivers will have regular routes, but some fill in for other drivers who are sick or on vacation, Lane said. Relief drivers are called in, too, if buses break down or for other emergencies.
“There are some people who have a gift for it,” Lane said. “They're kind of like taxicab drivers.”
This year, taking over new routes will be a little easier with new GPS systems that outline routes and stops, Lane said.
Drivers have to be safety-minded, Lane said. They must also be ready to work with students, who can be anywhere from prekindergarten students to 18-year-olds.
“That's a unique and challenging part of the job, but when it comes down to it, it's all about having a good rapport with the kids,” he said. “You have to be friendly, but you're not their friend.”
