Drummond flats open for hunting

Drummond Flats is still being developed, but currently open to hunting.
Already this year it has produced one trophy buck with two massive drop tines for an Enid hunter. Ryan Ross, an ensign in the U.S. Navy, had been seeing a lot of deer while duck hunting at Drummond Flats, so he started bringing his bow along. While leaving Drummond Flats after a duck hunt one day, Ross spotted a doe bedded in a field. Behind the doe was "antlers sticking up out of the grass,” he said. "I had seen other bucks out there before but nothing of that size,” he said. He turned around, parked his pickup downwind of the big buck and started inching his way into the field. He walked about 200 yards then crawled another 30 to 40 yards through the grass to get into range. He used a grunt call three times over the next 20 minutes, and a tiny spike buck appeared. The big buck stood when the smaller one came around the doe, and Ross was able to take a shot from about 15 yards away. "In the (hunting) regulations, it says there are not too many deer at Drummond, but I went to Kaw and Canton (wildlife management areas) and I have seen more deer at Drummond than either of those,” Ross said. Ross, 25, hasn’t scored the buck, but it field-dressed at 190 pounds. A California native who arrived in Oklahoma in September, Ross is stationed at Vance Air Force Base in Enid. Drummond Flats has become a popular place for he and others on the base who must rely on public lands for their hunting adventures. He limited out Tuesday on a duck hunt at Drummond Flats and is eager for the opening of pheasant season.
