Two duck sculptures destined for installation at the city's splash pads will be displayed first at the MAINSITE Contemporary Art gallery at 122 E Main St. The art gallery is home base for the Norman Arts Council.

The 4-foot, Fiberglas ducks are based on a design by artist Douglas Shaw Elder. Artists Chris McDaniel, Christian Pitt and Joshua Pitt painted the ducks, which will be installed near the splash pads at Andrews Park and Colonial Estates Park after the public has had a chance to view them at the downtown art gallery.

The ducks were supposed to have been unveiled Sunday at a public picnic at Lions Park, but the ceremony was rained out.

Children have been asked to complete designs on “ducky” drawings that were distributed in “Thursday” folders last week at the city's public schools.

The first 100 children to turn in completed drawings at the art gallery will receive a rubber duck.

Drawings may be turned in from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday.

Of the designs submitted, two names will be selected to win miniature replicas of the duck statue at the Firehouse Art Center, an original piece of art by Elder, which was the inspiration for commissioning other duck sculptures for the splash pads. Elder is the Firehouse Art Center's executive director.

The Fiberglas ducks are projects of Norman's Public Arts Board. Information about the public arts board may be found at www.normanarts.org.
