NORMAN — With gasoline prices nearly $4 per gallon and the cost of diesel fuel well beyond that mark, Norman drivers may be more willing than ever to "Dump the Pump.”

The Cleveland Area Rapid Transit bus system has scheduled its third annual Dump the Pump Day on Thursday. Bus fare will be free all day, even for the Sooner Express shuttle to and from Oklahoma City.

"The effort,” CART spokesman Kris Glenn said, "is aimed at publicizing Norman's public transportation system as a viable, economic and environmentally friendly mobility option.”

Riders also will be given free T-shirts and the bus system, for the first time, will have a rally at Andrews Park to include a free concert from Norman's popular musical group, the Hosty Duo.

The rally, scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m., also will have prize giveaways, live coverage from Oklahoma City radio station KOJK FM (97.3), and appearances from Norman-area elected officials.

Glenn said Dump the Pump Day last year attracted about 1,300 riders, which is 20 percent higher than normal on a summer day.

Sooner Express had a record 101 riders that day.

Glenn said the numbers were impressive considering Norman had strong storms throughout that day.

He expects the Dump the Pump initiative to be even more popular this year with fuel prices at record highs.

The bus system is operated by the University of Oklahoma, although it provides service for anyone on routes throughout Norman and on special loops with stops in Lexington, Noble, Norman and Moore.
