ANN ARBOR , Mich. (AP) — Cannon fire marked the start of the day at the University of Michigan during World War II.

Soldiers marched in uniform and in formation across the Diag — and at Michigan Stadium on football Saturdays. Professors took extended leave to fight overseas. Some never made it back home, let alone back to campus.
