‘Star Trek: The Next Generation — Redemption' Blu-ray
“Star Trek: Redemption” is a feature-length edit of the Season 4 finale of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and the Season 5 premiere. “Redemption, Part One” was the 100th episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
The Blu-ray presentation is outstanding, and the two-part episode is a great look at the world of the Klingons, the warrior race that includes Worf, the security officer of the starship Enterprise.
In this episode, Worf is seeking to clear his family's name from dishonor. His father is believed to have been a traitor, but Worf and Gowron, the leader of the council, know this to be false. At the same time, there's a leadership battle in the Klingon high council, as both Gowron and the house of Duras seek leadership of the Klingon Empire.
Michael Dorn as Worf gets a well-deserved spotlight. When Duras' sisters present a young Klingon as Duras' son, and demand he be installed as leader, the stage for a Klingon civil war is set. Worf resigns his commission as a Starfleet officer to serve in defense of Gowron (Robert O'Reilly).
The reveal of a familiar-looking character midway through the two-parter indicates that the Klingons may not be alone in the upcoming conflict.
Overall, “Redemption” is a strong story that looks better than ever.
The second half of the show is slightly less strong than the first, but altogether, the two-parter is a strong sampling of “TNG.”
Bonus features include audio commentaries from writer-producer Ronald D. Moore and visual effects artists Mike and Denise Okuda.
A documentary called “Survive and Succeed: An Empire at War” explores the story behind the Klingons in “Star Trek,” and features interviews with Moore, Dorn (Worf), O'Reilly (Gowron) and Gwynyth Walsh (B'Etor). The documentary explains, in great detail, how the “Next Generation” creative team expanded and explored the world and culture of the Klingons.
