Dwight Howard says Serge Ibaka should have been 'clear-cut' Defensive Player of the Year winner

Grizzlies center Marc Gasol was announced as the Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday afternoon, narrowly beating out LeBron James and Serge Ibaka for the award.

For Ibaka, it was the second straight season he has led the league in blocks, but came up short for this coveted trophy.

And if you ask his teammate and frontcourt mate Kendrick Perkins, the snub was a travesty.

The criticism from Perkins is almost to be expected. If given a vote, his MVP ballot would have likely looked like this:

1. Kevin Durant
2. Russell Westbrook
3. Serge Ibaka
4. Kevin Garnett
5. Derek Fisher

That’s just who he is, especially when it comes to defending his teammates. But the scowling Thunder big man isn’t the only one who seems to view Ibaka as the league’s best defender this year.

How about this tweet, from Lakers shootaround today, quoting Dwight Howard, a respected defender who has won the award three times.

Here was the entire voting for this year’s awards:
