Eagle & Beagle

Eagles

On the rare occasion when I take a week off (did you miss me?), our state-based stocks get an extra few trading days to make their case for eagle status.

That worked out well for SemGroup Corp., a Tulsa-based company that holds, moves and markets petroleum products and also owns a residential propane supply business.

SemGroup also is affiliated with Rose Rock Midstream L.P., a limited partnership formed by SemGroup to handle its midstream energy assets. Rose Rock and SemGroup in 2012 were among the state's top-performing publicly traded companies, as the units of each gained more than 50 percent last year.

SemGroup shares maintained that momentum over the past fortnight, adding 11.3 percent to close at $46.70. That nearly $5 gain over 10 trading days is impressive.

Beagles

On the other hand, our beagle is becoming a long-suffering pooch.

SandRidge Energy has seen its shares battered over the past couple of weeks. SD shares slipped 18.1 percent over the two-week period to close Friday at $5.79.

The Oklahoma City energy company has been challenged by two investors who hold significant — but nowhere near controlling — stakes in the firm. They seek to wrest control of the company away from current management, who have questioned the motives and expertise of the challengers.

This battle may well be determined by the legions of average SandRidge shareholders, which includes more than a few Oklahomans.
