Volunteers out picking trash ahead of Earth Day at Lake Overholser found a body Saturday in or near wildlife refuge there.

Oklahoma City police Sgt. Jennifer Morris confirmed that a body had been found and said homicide detectives were sent to investigate.

A state medical examiner's office vehicle and squad cars were parked Saturday afternoon in the 6900 block of Morgan Road, just east of the John Kilpatrick Turnpike.

About 40 volunteers met Saturday morning to pick up trash in the area, an organizer with the environmental group Friends of Lake Overholser said.

A team of volunteers was sent to a section of the Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge, a sprawling nature area north of Lake Overholser, in their clean-up effort.

A woman picking up trash in that section found the body mid-morning, organizer Bill Gronos said.

“The police did a crime scene area and made our clean-up team leave the area,” Gronos said.

Morris said police dispatchers received a call at 10:30 a.m. She wasn't sure if the body was in the preserve or on land owned by the turnpike, and said she did not know how badly the body had decomposed.

Morris said the medical examiner's office would have to determine details, such as the gender and how long the body had been there. has disabled the comments for this article.
