GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — East Carolina and Marshall have agreed to a home-and-home football series in 2020 and 2021.

The schools have played the past nine seasons as Conference USA East Division members, but East Carolina is headed to the American Athletic Conference in July.

Marshall's season-opening visit to Greenville in 2020 will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the charter plane crash that took place as the Marshall team returned home from a loss at East Carolina. Seventy-five people died in that November 1970 crash.

ECU athletic director Jeff Compher said in a statement the series allows the schools "to recognize and properly pay tribute to a tragedy that ties the communities of Greenville and Huntington together."

Marshall won last year's meeting 59-28 to clinch the division title in ECU's final C-USA season.
