Edmond bridge piers are being replaced

EDMOND — Contractors are replacing four piers on a bridge on Sooner Road that was closed in September for emergency repairs.

The 87-year-old bridge between Covell and Coffee Creek roads was shut down after state Department of Transportation officials found significant erosion around the timber supports, said City Engineer Steve Manek.
City Manager Larry Stevens said the contractor, Redlands Construction, has 75 calendar days to complete the project. The work should be completed by the end of April, Stevens said.
There is only one home on the closed section of roadway, but 3,000 to 4,000 vehicles typically travel that road each day.
Emergency design work and repairs are expected to cost $297,292. The cost was expected to be taken from the general fund reserves. Council members are discussing paying for the work with additional money the city has received this year from sales tax growth officials are calling “unprecedented.”
