— Janet Helms originally planned to spend her 50th birthday with her family on a cruise ship bound for an exotic locale.

Instead, the Edmond real estate agent changed her plans of a dream vacation to fulfill the dream of people halfway around the world — the dream of clean water.

Helms said she embraced the mission of the Oklahoma City-based Water4 Foundation a few months before her milestone birthday last year and encouraged her church, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Edmond, to do the same.

With Helms leading the way, the church created a new mission ministry in partnership with the Water4 Foundation called Disciples4Water to address the need for clean water in Third World countries and other areas of the world where such a human necessity is scarce.

She said she and other church members involved with the new ministry will take their first mission trip in October to drill water wells in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Saturday, Disciples4Water is hosting its last big fundraiser before the trip. The event will be at Shannon Miller Park, adjacent to the Edmond Library.

The Music4 Water Festival will include performances by several individuals and groups including Sully and Sisson, Patrick Winsett and the Foolish Pride Band, Jim Berkshire and John Paul.

Helms said the event also will include a live and silent auction, food trucks, refreshments from Land Run Winery, vendor booths and activities for people of all ages.
