Edmond City Council approves $22.5 million pool contract

Start of construction for Edmond's competitive swimming pool and recreation center should be in the near future with the approval of a contract. The $22.47 million bid from Atlas General Contractor LLC was approved by the city council.

Another $500,000 was taken out of the city's 2000 sales tax capital improvement project fund. Voters in 2000 approved a special sales tax for a number of capital improvement projects which included building the pool.

Edmond Electric will pay $691,000 for the geothermal cooling and heating system. Another $535,000 will come from the city's park tax to pay for parking lot improvements for Mitch Park.

The school district will pay its share of the design services, $865,418, from another source, and still contribute the $10 million.

Officials are looking at selling the naming rights to the aquatic complex to come up with more money.

YMCA and school officials were at this week's council meeting. They said they were excited to get started.

“This would not have happened without good partners,” Commons said.
