City council members Monday will consider a larger and taller sign than the city code allows for a Sam's Club proposed for the west side of Interstate 35 and north of the Walmart Supercenter.

Wayne Nice, attorney for Sam's, is asking that the sign be 150 square feet on each side and 60 feet from the ground. The code allows for a 25-foot-tall sign that is 60 square feet.

Sam's officials first requested a 500-square-foot sign, 70 feet from the ground. They reduced the size at the Sept. 11 planning commission meeting before the vote was taken.

Planning commissioners approved dimensions of 150-square-foot on each side and 60 feet from the ground, the same size as the signs at Integris Health Edmond and Mercy Health System medical complex, south of 15th Street and I-35.

Sam's is proposing to build a 138,000-square-foot membership store and fuel station on 15 acres in the southwest corner of Fox Lake Plaza. Sam's property has a 90-foot frontage on the interstate.

Neighbors in Fox Lake housing addition were still concerned about the height of the sign after the planning commission approved the smaller sign.

City council members meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday at 20 S Littler Ave.
