EDMOND — Beginning Monday, Kelly Avenue will be closed between Danforth and Covell roads in Edmond as the roadway is widened in front of a planned Lowe's Home Improvement Center.

Work is expected to take about 45 days, according to an Edmond city news release.

Local traffic will be allowed to drive north of Danforth to access the Hawks Landing housing addition.

The project will include the addition of southbound right turn lanes on Kelly, south of Covell into the Covell Village shopping center. The additional lanes will help the flow of traffic on Kelly, according to Edmond officials.

In addition to widening Kelly, the construction will include storm drainage improvements.

Lowe's Cos. Inc. agreed to pay 80 percent of the $974,533 price tag in order to speed up the project. The company's second Edmond store should be open by late October, according to the company.

I always go when the light turns green, sooner or later one of these light running morons in a Jag or Lexus is going to t-bone me and I'm going to retire early and they'll be begging for cash on Memorial and Penn.

Ah yes, I think I know exactly what you are talking about. I thought I was the only one that got TO'd by those things. There are almost 4 lights within a mile from that Taca Mayo on Santa Fe to Edmond Road and I seem to always catch every single one of them Red... it's idiotic.

Its all how much you want to spend on it to make it happen. Edmond already has the most sophistication available operating for Broadway. All lights from 33rd to 2nd are on camera motion actuation and they are also monitored at police dispatch. They can do the same for Kelly. OKC reprogrammed the Kelly-Memorial intersection to allow more N-S flow. Of course you always get the 5 or 6 cars that run the light. I do feel your pain though. I am in Edmond on Saturdays especially during siren tests. Getting from any side of Edmond to another side is a real joy. Between soccer moms, tumble kids, and shoppers its like Christmas every weekend. I'm glad they only test them once a month and not every Saturday like OKC.

I agree. It takes as long to get from my home in northwest Edmond to south Edmond as it does to get from south Edmond to Oklahoma City, even with the Broadway Extension work. Grant, you must live in my neighborhood! LOL

While they're at it, maybe they could reprogram a few of the traffic lights that constantly stop steadily moving groups of traffic mid stream for a single car that just arrived at the cross street. When a "commute" from Danforth and Santa Fe to Boulevard and 33rd takes 20 minutes, something is very wrong. The lights need to be "sync"ed up... especially in places where there are intermediate lights near major ones (like around the Walmart on Santa Fe). If people want to start seeing noticeable gas savings, imagine having your 15, 30, or 45 minute commute cut by 1/3 or more due to not idling at redlights that should never have disrupted traffic. Some cities and suburbs really get this... even using simple timers on certain sequences of lights. Edmond doesn't yet.
