The elementary school scheduled to open next year, known until this week as Edmond School No. 17, now has a name.

Heritage Elementary School was the name unanimously approved by the school board after Lynne Rowley, director of elementary education, told the audience the story behind the name selection process.

“We thought of naming the school after Jennie Forster, who opened Oklahoma's first library. Then we thought of naming it after Allie McCormick, who was the first teacher at Oklahoma's first public school, Edmond's 1889 Territorial Schoolhouse. We thought about naming it after Milton Kickingbird Reynolds, who founded the Edmond Sun, Oklahoma's first newspaper,” Rowley said.

Rowley said a committee of teachers, parents and members of the public met in the fall to brainstorm and discuss possible names.

“It became clear that there are multiple people we could have named this school after. Oklahoma was home to so many historical figures who left their mark on our state and on our nation. I don't think we'd ever have enough schools to acknowledge everyone,” Rowley said.
