New McDonald's coming
Plans are underway for a new McDonald's restaurant on the southwest corner of Covell Road and Interstate 35.
This will be the first eating establishment in the 300-acre development on three sides of the intersection that includes a hotel, conference center and indoor sports complex.
Planning commissioners recommended approval of a site plan for a new 4,365-square-foot building with seating for 87 people. City council members will make a final decision at their Jan. 27 meeting.
McDonald's asked for a variance to the city code for I-35 landscaping. Owners want to install 122 plant units in a 10-foot wide median on a new street called Market Street instead of putting the plantings on McDonald's property.
Although Chairman Barry Moore approved the request, Moore said Wednesday he thinks McDonald's is a large enough business that it could purchase enough plants for its property and the median and not have to ask the city for a variance.
“This is not a ma and pa burger place,” Moore said. “It is walking distance from a conference center. This is a prime location in Edmond.”
The new building will be constructed on a 37,728-square-foot lot with city utilities. Infrastructure on this site is almost complete.
The development is expected to include other restaurants, entertainment and retail. A new Braum's Ice Cream and Dairy Store also is in the plans, developers said.
Residents to learn about police
Residents can get an inside look at the Edmond Police Department during a 13-week Citizens Police Academy that starts Feb. 25. Classes will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at the Downtown Community Center, 28 E Main.
“The goal of the citizens police academy is to provide residents with a better understanding about what an Edmond police officer does on a daily basis, as well as to provide information about the Edmond Police Department,” officer Randy Paynesaid.
Graduation for the 35th academy is scheduled for May 20. All applicants must be at least 18, have no criminal record and be an Edmond resident or working within the city limits. Applications are online at www.edmondok.com. For more information, go to www.edmondpd.com/cpa or call 359-4437or email Randy.Payne@edmondok.com.
