Downtown Edmond is decorated for the Christmas season, and special events are planned throughout December.

Merchants launched the holiday shopping season with storefront decorations and a contest to name the top three window decorations.

The University of Central Oklahoma's Bob Palmer chose the winners in the window-decorating contest.

First place went to Fashion Boutique. Second place was awarded to Sterlings Home Decor & Gifts, and third place went to Sacred Heart.

The outdoor ice rink opened Friday and will be open through Jan. 6 at 30 W First St.

The annual Mayor's Tree Lighting and Edmond Electric Parade of Lights will be Dec. 8. The evening starts at 6 p.m. at Shannon Miller Park with the 2012 Mayor's Essay Contest winner presentation.

This year's essay theme was “If you were Cindy Lou Who, what would you do to convince the Grinch not to steal Christmas and help his heart grow three sizes too big?”

The winner will ride in the parade that starts at 6:45 p.m. from the UCO campus and continues through downtown.

“To continue with the theme of the parade, each entry is required to have lights adorning their float,” said Michelle Trimberger, Edmond Electric program coordinator.
