A second hospital for the 75,000-person city of Edmond will "complement” the existing Edmond Medical Center, Mayor Dan O’Neil said Wednesday.

Integris Health celebrated the start of construction on a $90 million, 40-bed hospital along Interstate 35 in east Edmond with a ceremony at Henderson Hills Baptist Church, which sold 24.5 acres to Integris in 2007. The Integris hospital will join a market that has been served for more than 60 years by Edmond Medical Center, a 94-bed, HCA-owned hospital on E Second Street in the heart of the city.

"We expect that both facilities will flourish,” O’Neil said.

"They (Edmond Medical Center) are making investments in our community and continue to make investments in our community and are a vital partner in our community.”

Why add one?
Stan Hupfeld, Integris chief executive, said the rapidly growing city of Edmond can accommodate both hospitals.

"They’ve (Edmond Medical Center) done a good job, and, obviously, HCA is an excellent organization,” Hupfeld said. "But they haven’t grown the facility over the years, and we just think that given the population growth here there is plenty of room for them to do well and us to do well.”

Enhancements cited
Tayo Fichtl, Edmond Medical Center’s chief executive officer, pointed to recent enhancements at his facility such as expansion of its diagnostic imaging center.

"Our outpatient physical therapy is also concluding a complete remodel of its facilities,” Fichtl said. "We will continue to use our knowledge of Edmond and the vast recourse available to us within our parent company, HCA, to develop and refine the services our patients need and desire.”

Competition — even in the health care industry — is a positive, said Ken Moore, president of the Chamber of Commerce.

"That’s probably good for everybody,” Moore said.
