It started a year ago. The day the Midwest City boys basketball team took out Edmond Memorial in overtime in the state quarterfinals, the goal was clear for the Bulldogs for the 2010-11 season.

Loaded with talent, the Bulldogs knew this year could be their year. But loaded with talent, they had to find a way to complement each other and for everybody to find their role.

That wasn't a problem and Memorial claimed the gold ball by defeating the Bombers the third time in the championship. The Bulldogs celebrated their championship Friday morning in a short ceremony in the commons area at the high school.

“It couldn't be one guy or two guys. Everybody had to come together and make the sacrifices,” senior Obi Emegano said.

The Bulldogs did just that in going 27-1, the best record in school history, said athletic director Mike Dela Garza. Dela Garza coached the only other championship squad, the 1993 group that went 27-2.

This year's Memorial club was paced by Emegano. But on any given night Jared Jobe, Jordan Woodard or James Woodard could step up.

Even with Jordan battling an ankle injury in the championship, he came up big, and James Woodard posted a double-double in the title game.

“It was one goal. It didn't matter who put up the numbers. It never has for us,” Emegano said.

Memorial's only loss was to Edmond Santa Fe, but the Bulldogs beat the Wolves three times. The last meeting came in the state semifinals.
