Edmond North High School music teacher Peter Markes has been named 2014 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year.

Markes, 34, was selected from 12 finalists during a ceremony Tuesday at the Oklahoma State Fair. He teaches string orchestra and Advanced Placement music theory.

“Mr. Markes’ passion for teaching and instilling confidence in his students as well as his ability to interweave the more rigorous Oklahoma academic standards into his classroom work epitomizes what we strive for in every effective teacher,” state schools Superintendent Janet Barresi said in a statement.

In all, about 15o teachers from across the state were considered by a statewide panel of judges that included past winners.
