Edmond North hired Guthrie’s Pete Papahronis as its new girls basketball coach at a special school board meeting on Friday morning.

Papahronis guided the Guthrie boys team to multiple state tournaments, including back-to-back Class 5A titles in 2008-09, before moving over to coach the girls team the past two seasons.

“We’re really excited,” said Mike Nunley, district athletic director for the Edmond schools. “Pete lives here in Edmond. His children go to school here. He’s a really good coach, and we're lucky to get him.”

Papahronis replaces Karlie Free, who stepped away from coaching after three seasons with the Huskies, but plans to remain a teacher in the Edmond school system.

Free has a 1-year-old baby and wanted to have more time with her family.
