EDMOND — It’s hard to imagine anyone more prepared for his first head coaching job than Scott Burger.

Named Edmond North’s new head football coach on Wednesday morning, Burger’s journey of more than three decades as an assistant coach has taken the next step.

Burger is leaving Putnam City North, where he’s been an assistant for the last 29 seasons. Over that span, he worked as an offensive and defensive coordinator, serving under an impressive lineage of head coaches — Ron Taylor, Mike Little and Bob Wilson.

Before that, he spent time under other well-respected coaches Henry Manning at Del City and Kenny Ray at Ponca City.

“I’ve been very fortunate to work for some great coaches,” Burger said. “Being a coordinator, both defense and offense, and being around the head coaches I’ve had the opportunity to work for, I feel like I’m fully prepared to take on this job.”

Burger takes over a Class 6A program that has reached the second round of the playoffs each of the last three seasons. He replaces Jeremy Dombek, who left earlier this month to take the head job at Mustang.

“Scott is one of the few men who have coached both sides of the ball as a coordinator in a successful program like Putnam City North,” Edmond Schools athletic director Mike Nunley said. “In addition to that, his character and reputation as a coach and an individual are incredible. We’re just thrilled to be adding him to our coaching staff.”
