Edmond North's bats come around in rout of Deer Creek

EDMOND — Thursday was a good sign for Edmond North.

Friday was an even better sign.

The Huskies’ bats came alive in a 15-3 rout of Deer Creek in the Deer Creek/Yukon Invitational, aiding a pitching staff that has been impressive of late.

And Edmond North coach Karl King thinks his team can make a push in the postseason should the bats come around.

“Yesterday was encouraging being able to go out and put a quality game against Yukon (a 1-0 loss), a good offensive team,” he said. “With the runs, it takes a little pressure off our pitching staff. If we get some runs going, I think we have the ingredients to make a run at it, so we’ll see.”

Against Deer Creek, Tyler Clark pitched five solid innings before turning it over to Will Bartolino for the final two innings.

“Tyler did a great job,” King said. “He’s not going to overpower you with the fastball, but he’s got good secondary stuff and he’s able to keep you off balance. Tyler did a great job getting ahead in the count and being able to throw more of his game instead of letting the hitters dictate what he was going to throw.”

Clark’s biggest mistake was a two-run home run by Deer Creek first baseman Caleb Eldridge, an Oklahoma State signee, in the third inning. It did little damage, though, following the Huskies’ seven-run outburst in the top of the third that was capped by a two-run homer from Luke Reynolds. Bartolino later added a solo homer off Eldridge in a seven-run sixth.

Deer Creek opened its portion of the tournament Friday with a 12-4 run-rule victory over Enid.
