Edmond North senior-to-be Hayden Wood got his summer started with a bang. Wood, who has verbally committed to Oklahoma State, defeated Weatherford’s Quade Cummins in the match play final of the Oklahoma Golf Association Junior Championship Thursday at Kickingbird Golf Club in Edmond.
The event, which involves two rounds of stroke play to set the top 16 players for a match play bracket, lasted four days, with Wood defeating Cummins, the Class 4A state champion, 3 and 2. Earlier in the day, Wood defeated Norman North’s Thomas Johnson in the semifinals 3 and 2, while Cummins beat Edmond Memorial’s Jacob Bishop 4 and 2.
In the girls bracket, it was a showdown of future teammates, with Choctaw’s Anna Mikish edging Oktaha’s Kailey Campbell 2 and 1. Both players have signed to play for NAIA national champion Oklahoma City University.
Piedmont’s Dustin Hasley won the 14-15 boys age bracket, defeating Lane Wallace of Yukon in 20 holes.
