EDMOND — A neighbor adjacent to the Islamic Society of Edmond's mosque at 525 N University Drive is upset about the size of the proposed fellowship activity building and parking.
Misty Buchanan, 325 E Thatcher, said she does not agree with the overall size of the new building and said it is too large for a single-family residential neighborhood.
The Islamic Society of Edmond wants to construct an 8,307-square-foot building to the west of the 680-square-foot main worship center, near the southwest corner of Wayne and University Drive.
“This scale does not fit the neighborhood at all,” Buchanan said this week to city planning commissioners who were considering a specific use permit for the new building. “With the size being so large and out of scale it will destroy the feel of our backyards.
“Also, the design on the plans does not fit in the neighborhood. This is the old part of Edmond with a traditional historic feel. The structure is a very modern style that will be tall and over powering and not fit into the style of the existing neighborhood.”
The highest point of the building is 49 feet tall. The main portion of the building is 24 feet tall.
