Edmond planning commission OKs rezoning request
Development: Outdoor retail store wants to sell electric cars

EDMOND — Planning commissioners recommended rezoning property at an outdoor retail store and indoor gun range at 1472 N Kelly Ave. to allow for the sale of electric cars.

Site plan approved
Planning commissioners approved the site plan for Switzer’s Locker Room storage along Interstate 35.

The development, near Second Street and Saints Boulevard, is on 5.11 acres east of I-35. It is approximately three-fourths of a mile north of Second Street at the end of Saints Boulevard.

The vote was 4-1. Lee cast the only no vote.

Todd McKinnis, attorney for the developers, said they were not asking for any variances and had met all the city codes including the I-35 corridor standards.

Lee said she did not think the plans met the I-35 standards. She said the city has only one shot to meet these higher standards, so when people drive down I-35 in Edmond they see something that isn’t like anywhere else along the highway.

Owners Mike and Shawn Forth had to ask for the zoning change from general commercial to a planned unit development district so they can sell the low-speed vehicles at their business, Heartland Outdoors.

The change also allows the owners to display one of the electric cars outside during business hours.

Planning commissioners approved the request with a 4-1 vote. Commissioner Lydia Lee voted no.

City council members will make a final decision Nov. 23.

Randel Shadid, the owners’ attorney, said the zoning change was necessary because of the city’s Title 22 zoning code, passed in March 2007. Shadid said the owners saw the marketing of electric cars as a profitable venture and something their customers requested.

"This is a significant change,” Lee said. "This is a higher use than we anticipated.”
