City council members will consider Monday purchasing seven BMW police motorcycles to replace the Harley-Davidson motorcycles the Edmond officers now ride.

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at 20 S Littler Ave.

The motorcycles will cost $25,304 each, or $177,125.

Police Sgt. Acey Hopper said the change is primarily for safety reasons.

“They also have the lowest operating cost,” Hopper said.

Edmond officers test drove the BMW motorcycles. They also talked to officers at other police agencies, such as the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, who ride the BMW model.

The Harley-Davidson and the BMW are comparable in cost, Hopper said.

The motorcycles would be purchased from the department's motor vehicle fund.

The Harleys, now used by seven motorcycle officers and purchased in 2009, have been ridden between 10,000 and 18,000 miles.

Edmond switched to Harley-Davidsons in 2006 when Kawasaki stopped making police motorcycles.

The old motorcycles will be auctioned online.

If the purchase is approved, the new motorcycles are expected to be delivered in April.
