Edmond Rotary awards scholarships

The Edmond Rotary Club awarded $2,000 scholarships to four high school students.

— The Edmond Rotary Club has awarded $2,000 scholarships to Kelsey Belden and Kelly Karguth of Memorial High School, Taylor Carter of Santa Fe High School and Preston Williams of Edmond North High School.

Awards were granted to the four students based on their community service, economic need, academics and leadership activities, according to a news release.

Kelsey Belden has been a Youth Leadership Exchange member and helped raise $22,000 for nonprofit organization Oklahoma Lawyers for Children. She received an Advanced Placement with Honors award and is secretary of the National Honor Society. During Belden's summer vacations she volunteered at Infant Crisis Center. She is the daughter of Mark and Laura Belden. She plans to study in college for a service-related field.

Kelly Karguth has volunteered at vacation Bible school and the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and took several mission trips abroad while in high school. She is treasurer of the Orchestra Council at Memorial High as well as a class representative. Karguth hopes to study developmental education, then earn a master's degree in education before teaching second grade. Her parents are Don and Marty Karguth.

Taylor Carter plans to pursue a career in the medical field. She attended the University of Oklahoma's Health Sciences Summer Teen program and was named “best cookie maker” and student with the best smile. Carter was volunteer of the year at St. John Missionary Baptist Church and was selected to participate in the Youth Leadership Exchange Program. For five summers, Carter has volunteered at Special Care, a childhood day care and therapy center. Carter's parents are Keith and Linda Carter.
