Edmond Santa Fe baseball coach Jeff Shafer heading to Tecumseh

After one year, Jeff Shafer is leaving Edmond Santa Fe.

The baseball coach resigned over the weekend, Santa Fe Athletic Director Barry Blagowsky told The Oklahoman. Shafer has accepted a position at Tecumseh, where he will be the athletic director and baseball coach.

“I think that was something he was hoping to pursue for a while,” Blagowsky said. “I think the opportunity just came around sooner than later.”

Shafer led the Wolves to a 20-11 record and the state tournament last season. Santa Fe, though, was eliminated in the Class 6A quarterfinals Owasso, 11-1. Owasso went on to win the state championship.

After a tenure as the head coach at Seminole State,  Shafer was just the second coach in Edmond Santa Fe’s program history after replacing Lonny Cobble, who is now coaching Oklahoma Christian University.

Now, Santa Fe is looking for a third coach, and at a bad time with the school year quickly approaching.

“We are in a very unusual place to have a quality program like we have with the background and success, and yet right now we are kind of in a precarious position not having a coach,” Blagowsky said. “We’re searching.”
