Edmond Santa Fe football: Wolves counting on experienced and talented junior class

The Wolves, who went 6-5 last season, will start entirely juniors at linebacker with Mike Coats, Zeke Jenkins, Cameron Gonzaque and move-in Dillon Hall. The defensive line also consists of juniors Grant Newton and Diamen House.

— Suffering through a season marred with injuries can have its benefits.

For Edmond Santa Fe, that benefit is getting young players a lot of experience entering this season in the new Class 6A Division I.

“We just had to play a lot of young kids last year and I think it’s going to go a long way for us now,” Santa Fe coach Lance Manning said. “At the time it’s frustrating, but the next year you feel good about it. We’re going into the season confident that we’re going to have a good football team. You never know to what extent until you get going.”

Manning knows he has a talented junior class that he is leaning on. It includes quarterback Keaton Torre and running back Darren Williams.

But perhaps the junior impact is felt more on the defensive side this season.

“I look at those kids and we didn’t want to have to play all of these kids last year as sophomores, but looking back it allowed us to see how talented they were and how good they’re going to be,” Manning said.
