Edmond Santa Fe QB Justice Hansen sits out Thursday's opener against Midwest City

Edmond Santa Fe senior quarterback Justice Hansen was dressed for Thursday night’s game against Midwest City and participating in warmups, but coach Lance Manning said the Oklahoma commitment would not be playing.

Senior running back Cameron Westbrook started at quarterback and junior Ke’Marrie Carter-Hartfield started at running back.

Normal backup quarterback Keaton Torre, a sophomore, was also unavailable after undergoing minor knee surgery. He said he hopes to return next week.

Hansen has been dealing with an injured hamstring and Manning didn’t want to risk further damage.

“Talking with the trainers and doctors, it’s just his nature to take off and run even if we tell him not to,” Manning said. “It’s just something this early, obviously we want to win this first ballgame, but we don’t want to risk that. There’s too much at stake this season.

“We’ve got total confidence in Cameron Westbrook and his ability to make plays. He proved that to us last week. He’s a dynamic athlete.”

Manning isn’t ruling Hansen out for next week’s game against Yukon, but he isn’t saying he will play either.

“You never know, but we feel really good about him even going through all week’s practice full speed,” he said. “But you never know. Obviously things happen for a reason. It’s been really good for our football team to have to adjust and find some other things to do, and in the long run it’ll benefit us”
