Edmond Santa Fe rallies to hand Midwest City season-opening loss

For Edmond Santa Fe quarterback Justice Hansen, it was the perfect kind of game. The Wolves got a win, did some good things, and left their season opener against Midwest City with plenty to work on going forward.

Edmond Santa Fe beat Midwest City 50-42, coming from a big deficit early in the game and hanging on to hand the Bombers their first season-opening loss since 2009.

“There's a lot of excitement after a game like this,” Hansen said. “A game like this does a lot for us.”

Hansen, in particular, said he handled the early situation better than he would've a season ago.

Early on, Santa Fe was reeling, falling behind 27-8 after a second-quarter onslaught that included heavy doses of Bombers running back Qualan Johnson.

But the Wolves chipped away, with a pair of touchdowns in the final 1:28 of the first half to climb back in the game.

“I usually handle myself all right staying calm out there,” Hansen said. “But tonight, I made it a point to keep my offensive line positive and let everyone know we were still in the game and not to get down.

“That's a part of my game I've really been working on.”

It also helps to have receivers like Santa Fe's.
