EDMOND — The Edmond School Board has approved a change to the district’s graduation requirements starting with the class of 2011.

Under the new policy, which was approved last week, if a student retakes a course, both grades will be recorded and figured into the student’s grade-point average. The student, however, would receive credit for the course only once.

For those students taking college classes, the new policy outlines how college credit will be applied to a student’s transcript.

If the college course objectives conform to the district’s requirements, the course will be counted as an academic credit. If the course does not align with district’s curriculum, the credit will be counted as an elective.

Grades earned through concurrent enrollment will be included in determining a student’s grade point average. The policy also allows for individualized education programs to be developed for students with disabilities.

Middle school project
The board approved preliminary plans for renovation work on Central Middle School. Plans call for the renovation of more than a dozen of the school’s classrooms and the construction of a 6,000-square-foot addition that will house two new classrooms.

The renovated classrooms will receive new carpet, SMARTboards and fresh paint and some of the school’s hallways will receive new light fixtures. Several rest rooms also will be renovated to be handicap-accessible.

School officials said the work will be done in three phases with completion planned for in 2011. It will be paid for from previously approved bond funds.
