City pool plan advances
In other business, the Edmond School Board approved an agreement with Oklahoma Christian University to pay $50 an hour for swim teams to use the university's pool during the 2010-11 school year.
The school district had planned to explore the feasibility of building a pool with the city of Edmond and The Y. Each entity was to pay $15,000 for the study.
District officials pulled out of the project citing budget constraints.
The Y and city officials have agreed to spend $6 million each to build a center with a gymnasium, family swimming pool, walking track and fitness center. Final details on the partnership are being completed.
Assistant City Manager Steve Commons said plans for the center will include future expansion if the schools decide to come on board with a competition swimming pool.
Mayor Patrice Douglas said the University of Central Oklahoma and OC declined to be a part of project.
The board also approved a bid of almost $2.4 million to Pillar Contracting for work at West Field Elementary School.
Both projects will be paid for with bond funds.
Work at Memorial will include the renovation of 26 classrooms, construction of a computer-lecture room and expansion of the backstage area in the auditorium, Associate Superintendent Bret Towne said. Work should begin in September and will run through August 2011.
At West Field, 12 classrooms will be built and parking spaces added. That work also will run from September to August.
The board also selected The Stacy Group as the architect for modifications to Edmond North High School's indoor pitching and batting facility and for water drainage work at John Ross Elementary School.
Final design plans for Will Rogers Elementary School also were approved. That work will include construction of six classrooms, renovations and expansion to the office area and a secured entrance to the school. The board is entering the bid phase now, Towne said, with work expected to begin in October.
