Superintendent David Goin sent letters to parents and teachers this week informing them the Oklahoma City-County Health Department will give the free H1N1 vaccines at Edmond schools during November.

Consent forms, schedules and information sheets will be sent home with elementary students Wednesday and must be returned the next day. That same information will go out Nov. 12 to the parents of middle and high school students.

Parents who want their children inoculated will be able to choose whether the vaccine is injected or inhaled.

Edmond teachers can get the vaccine if they fall into one of five categories identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as having a greater chance of catching the illness.

Edmond school officials have reported a steady rise in student absences in recent weeks. In September, the highest number of student absences reported for any one week was just above 1 percent. In October, that number had increased to more than 5 percent of the student population.

Since then, the district has stepped up efforts to keep desks and commons areas sanitized. Absences also are monitored by the Oklahoma City-County Health Department.
