The Areawide Aging Agency’s program fed an average of 65 people daily hot meals until it was closed earlier this month.

Because of $7.4 million in budget cuts to the Department of Human Services, cuts were made to the Aging Service Division, which funds the senior nutrition programs. The Edmond program was cut by $53,000.

Douglas said she hopes enough money has been donated to allow the meals to be restored by Monday.

"We are still working with state channels, which are likely,” Douglas said. "I didn’t want to go two weeks or two months while we wait and see what happens and they have no meals during that time.”

Churches and others in Edmond were willing to help, but there are strict health department rules that couldn’t be met, Douglas said.

Officials currently are taking bids from people with kitchens that meet health department regulations. They are talking to a caterer and retirement home at this time, the mayor said.

The Areawide Aging Agency closed three senior nutrition program sites in Oklahoma County including Choctaw, Joy Church and the meals program at the Edmond Senior Center. Gail Deaton, executive director of the Edmond Senior Center, said the Edmond program does support seniors with low income, minorities and those at risk nutritionally.
