NBC News on Friday reported the charges were related to the death of a 19-year-old soldier who committed suicide after being in Iraq for 10 days.

The four Multi-National Division-South soldiers are accused of abusing Pvt. Keiffer P. Wilhelm of Ohio with excessive physical fitness, said Lt. Col. Kevin Olson, who is a military spokesman, according to an NBC report.

A military official said Wilhelm stopped going to public areas to avoid being harassed repeatedly for being overweight. The Fort Bliss soldier locked himself inside a portable toilet and shot himself with a rifle Aug. 4 in Maysan Province, according to the news report. NBC said the official spoke on condition of anonymity.

Olson said there was no confirmed evidence the suicide was the result of mistreatment, but he said the military is looking into the possibility.
